Welcome to PCCCS in Parkville. The Platte County Community Centers, operated by the YMCA of Greater Kansas City, have expanded thanks to a voter-approved half-cent sales tax to fund Platte County Parks and Recreation.
 

New amenities now open include:

  • Expanded Child Watch with a nursery, Discover Zone for toddlers and an Adventure Center with a mini basketball court

This facility also offers FitLinxx- a computerized exercise tracking system that attaches directly to fitness equipment, adding an extraordinary “intelligent” dimension to your workout experience.  The system learns your exercise programs, coaches you through your workout, tracks progress over time and provides a level of safety and confidence during every exercise. Meet our Staff

Meet the wonderful staff at Platte County Community Center South.

Kathy Armitage - Active Lifestyle Program Director
Kathy grew up in Kansas City, MO, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Management with an emphasis in Therapeutics from Central Missouri State. Prior to joining the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2001, Kathy spent 15 years in mental health as a recreation therapist. In addition to working with people who are 50 and older through healthy living programs that support body, mind and spirit, Kathy is the Platte County Community Garden coordinator. In her free time, she enjoys outdoor cycling, master swimming, traveling and volunteering for her daughter's swim team. She enjoys that her role allows her to work with ages 50 and older, create new programs outside the four walls of the center, and collaborate with others to serve more people in the community.

Paula Flynn - Healthy Living Director

Paula holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Boise State University. She previously worked in the fitness field in New York, Florida and Germany while her husband traveled during his military career. She been a part of the Y since June of 2007, when she began as a group exercise instructor and head trainer at our Platte County Community Center North location. Paula enjoys her role as the Healthy Living Director because she is able to help others discover their personal paths to a healthy lifestyle. She cites the people, members and staff alike, as her favorite part of her job.

Shannan Garcia - Associate Executive Director
Shannan, a native of Albuquerque, NM, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Colorado. She is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, CrossFit Level 1 Trainer, and is certified in YMCA Strength and Conditioning. Since she began working at the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2008, Shannan has served as the Olathe Family YMCA Aquatics Director and the Providence YMCA/Ball Family Center Healthy Living Director. Prior to working at the Y, Shannan worked in aquatics managing neighborhood pools and teaching swim lessons. She also has worked in social services with troubled youth. In her current role, she enjoys being able to help people who otherwise wouldn't be able to to afford a membership or programs for themselves and their families. Shannan is a member of the Parkville Chamber Board and Rotary. In her free time, she enjoys long distance running, triathlons and CrossFit.

Garry Linn - District Vice President
Garry, a native of central Indiana, holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in Sports Science and Fitness Management from Upper Iowa University. He came to the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2001 and has also served as a Sports Director, Senior Sports Director and Executive Director. Prior to working at the Y, he was a college professor and coach. For Garry, the best part of his job is being part of an organization that exists to positively impact the lives of the people every day by helping them build confidence, self-esteem and the courage to make a contribution to their community. Garry is a board member for the Recreation Council of Greater Kansas City; a member of Northland Regional Chamber, Parkville Area Chamber, North Kansas City Breakfast Club, Northland Youth Suburban League, Southern Platte Rotary, Vision North Committee and Liberty Area Chamber; a previous Board member of the Parkville Chamber; and a YMCA Challenger Sports Volunteer.

Matt Mann - Youth and Family Program Coordinator
Matt has a masters degree in Project Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. Prior to joining the Platte County Community Center South team, Matt was a before and after school program site supervisor for the YMCA of Greater Kansas City. In his current role, he enjoys the opportunity to serve thousands of people in our community through fun activities and big events, like Kids Night Outs, Child Watch, the summer block party and New Year's Eve celebration. He has worked in nonprofit, church and parachurch organizations since 2002, most recently as a Program Director with Boys & Girls Club of the Ozarks in Branson, MO. His hobbies include drawing, reading, playing board games, and spending time with his wife, children and their church family.

Tonya Hoopes - Aquatics Director

Becky Owens-Miller - Program Assistant: Youth and Family Programs
Becky, a native of St. Louis, MO, holds a degree in Psychology and Theater from Tarkio College. She has spent her career impacting the lives of youth and families as a preschool teacher, swim instructor and social worker. She has been a part of the YMCA at several points in her career, with her current tenure spanning six years. She enjoys her role on the Youth and Family Programs team because she gets to interact with the community in a fun and positive way through events like Kids Night Out, Tween Night Out and community events. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and children, painting, sewing, swimming and outdoor activities.

Eric Wagner, Property Director
Eric, a native of Rushville, MO, joined the Platte County Community Center South team in 2007. His previous experience includes commercial and residential facilities management. He is a certified Pool Operator and Aquatics Facility Operator. What he likes most about his role are the endless and unique opportunities to impact people's lives and share experiences with so many diverse people every day. In his spare time, he enjoys outdoor activities and spending time with his friends and family.

Derrick Wilde - Sports Director
Derrick, a native of Westpahlia, MO, joined the YMCA of Greater Kansas City in 2013. He holds a degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Missouri State University. He has spent most of his career in municipal parks and recreation in the Kansas City area. His passion is positively impacting children through quality youth sports experiences. He attributes his career to values such as teamwork, trust, creativity and sportsmanship that he learned while playing sports his entire life. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping and sports with his wife and two sons. He is a certified Parks and Recreation Professional and Youth Sports Administrator.
