Adaptive/Challenger Programs

Adaptive Sports, Swimming and Other Activities

YMCA Challenger programs are offered year round at a variety of locations around the metropolitan area. Please check the web site regularly to see what new programs and locations have been added. New programs for teens and young adults were added in fall 2009.

Baseball, Ages 5-30. Athletes are assigned to teams by age/ability and are coached by volunteers. Kids will learn the fundamentals of baseball through drills and during games. Teams are separated into age divisions for two practice and four game sessions.

Basketball, Ages 5-30. Athletes are assigned to teams by age/ability and are coached by volunteers.Teams are separated into age divisions for two practice and four game sessions. Participants will learn the fundamentals of basketball through drills and during games.

Bowling, Ages 4-30. In this inclusive program, participants are divided into small groups/lanes by age and will bowl for one hour. Ramps, bumpers and extra light balls are used when needed. Kids will learn how to hold the ball properly and other basics of bowling.

Fitness, Ages 5-30. This inclusive program engages participants in a variety of fitness exercises and equipment. Led by YMCA fitness staff, participants also will be introduced to basic nutrition and healthy lifestyle practices.

Soccer, Ages 4-30. Athletes are assigned to teams by age/ability and are coached by volunteers. Kids will learn the fundamentals of soccer through drills and during games. Teams are separated into age divisions for two practice and four game sessions.

Swim Exploration, Ages 4-30. Designed to help participants gain confidence in the water. Swimmers work on beginner water skills to help advance to lessons. Parent participation is recommended but not required.

Swim Lessons, Ages 4-30. This program is designed to teach your child how to swim. Swimmers are grouped by ability and taught in small groups by a certified instructor.

Tennis, Ages 5-30. Participants will learn tennis skills through fun drills using adapted equipment. Lead-up games will be played as well as singles and doubles matches.

Visual Arts, Ages 5-30. This inclusive program offers participants the experience of many different media. Taught by professional art instructors, this session will bring out self-expression and confidence.
