Our Summer of Service empowers youth to become engaged in their community and develop social responsibility. Teams of middle school youth work together throughout the summer to explore and address community needs such as poverty and hunger, children’s health and development and environmental conservation. They learn about problems facing their community, discover and participate directly in solutions, and connect these experiences to the larger world. Summer of Service develops leaders, builds teamwork skills, and gives youth a meaningful way to connect to each other and their community.
Camp hours are 7:30-5:30, Monday-Friday, located at Broadway/Redemption United Methodist Church. ($220 for Y members, $240 for community participants, Camp Director Jeramy Medlin)
In 2012, Summer of Service will offer four two-week sessions throughout the summer:
There will also be an evening orientation for families during the week prior to the start of the program, and an end-of-summer celebration event the week following the conclusion of the final session.
- Session 1: June 4–15
- Session 2: June 18–29
- Session 3: July 9–20
- Session 4: July 23–August 3
Typical Service Day:
- 7:30-8:30 a.m.: Parent drop-off
- 8:30-9 a.m.: Opening assembly
- 9-9:15 a.m.: Morning team meetings
- 9:15-9:30 a.m.: Depart for service sites
- 3-3:30 p.m.: Arrive back at church.
- 3:30-4:15 p.m.: Afternoon team meetings
- 4:15-4:30 p.m.: Closing assembly
- 4:30-5:30 p.m.: Parent pick-up
